Arrrggh! Ahoy mates, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. . . for the dreaded Porch Pirates!

I remember a simpler time, just a few decades ago, when getting a package delivered was a most special affair. Somebody had taken the time and effort to put something in a...

Squirrels. They’re the bane of my existence right now.

My dogs have been on a squirrel hunt for as long as I can remember. Roxie, my boxer mix, sits on the couch each morning, looking through the tiny slats in the bamboo blinds covering the window, looking for movement...

Thanksgiving is a big deal in our family. It’s a time to gather together, catch up with family and friends, and…

Who am I kidding? Thanksgiving is all about the food! I typically host the Thanksgiving meal at my home. I have a nine-foot farm table that can easily seat 1...

“Kindness is a language the blind can see and the deaf can hear.” – Mark Twain

Ashley Crandall is a very kind person. She treats people with respect and finds that life is generally better when people are kind towards one another. She values kindness so much, that she f...

Retreats are a way to escape the demands of everyday life and to focus on one thing, for the most part. I recall going to religious retreats when I was a teenager. Too old for Vacation Bible School, the youth group at my little church would gather together for a night...

Mississippi has some great storytellers. Greg Harkins is one of them. With his signature white beard and a twinkle in his eye, he’s been mistaken for Santa Claus more than once, and says he’s been mistaken for worse. Building toys is not his thing. Instead, Greg builds...

Confused and frustrated by others and his state, Horace Benbow in William Faulkner’s

Sanctuary says, “I need a change. Either I, or Mississippi, one.”

Do we sometimes feel like Horace? We love our state, but it confounds us.

Mississippimatters' creative co-op of writers, videographers and thinkers invites wrestling with such tensions.

MM won't cover much breaking news. Instead, it will reflect, suggest  and chat.

Some entries will be a bit deeper. We will feature investigative articles other publications avoid. Lots of lighthearted ideas will be tossed in about enjoyable people, places and things. Expect an eclectic mix.

If we're easily pegged politically or socially, we need to do better. Let us know.

Some contributors have "extra" degrees, others are "degree-less." All can write; they care and dare to share their hearts and minds (and they can turn a phrase).

Our writers come from unlikely places. We think some of the best thinkers use a wrench. not a pen.

Some of our "takes" may upset you. Thanks for feeling! Some may prop up your opinions. We hope to prompt banter at water coolers, coffee shops and family tables.

It’s so true—we in the Magnolia State often feel like Horace Benbow. Faulkner tapped into us.

How about us doing some head-scratching together?

Let’s laugh, muse and talk. After all, Mississippi Matters.
