The 2018-19 waterfowl season is upon us.  Though we’ve already had an early teal and Canada goose season back in September, the full-blown duck season is poised to commence, and diehard duck hunters are chomping at the bits to get going.  As in the past few years, Than...

Spring has sprung, a time when March winds bring April showers and then come May flowers.  As it turned out this spring, however, the March winds brought lots of March showers.  Farmers are frustrated and baseball coaches are baffled, and all any of us can do is simply...

Caught any red herrings lately? I doubt it. That's because a "red herring" isn't a fish. You actually catch most red herrings in the media, not a lake.

A "red herring" is a phrase that defines a falsehood or an irrelevant point into an argument, discussion or plot...

Many of us can relate to amazing adventures in life.  We’ve all had a few.  My first turkey hunt was an amazing adventure that launched a 37-year obsession with pursuing turkeys all over North America.  Many, if not all of us, have also had some agonizing adventures....

You’ve heard the old saying, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”  Well, there are certain situations in the management of wildlife world when a slightly edited version of that phrase fits perfectly.  Here in the United States, especially the southeastern U.S., and even...

This past week, a truly legendary individual passed from this world into the glories of heaven.  Luther Edward “Eddie” Slater, Jr. was someone well known and widely recognized all across the United States for his innovation and leadership in the fishing industry.  Near...

Confused and frustrated by others and his state, Horace Benbow in William Faulkner’s

Sanctuary says, “I need a change. Either I, or Mississippi, one.”

Do we sometimes feel like Horace? We love our state, but it confounds us.

Mississippimatters' creative co-op of writers, videographers and thinkers invites wrestling with such tensions.

MM won't cover much breaking news. Instead, it will reflect, suggest  and chat.

Some entries will be a bit deeper. We will feature investigative articles other publications avoid. Lots of lighthearted ideas will be tossed in about enjoyable people, places and things. Expect an eclectic mix.

If we're easily pegged politically or socially, we need to do better. Let us know.

Some contributors have "extra" degrees, others are "degree-less." All can write; they care and dare to share their hearts and minds (and they can turn a phrase).

Our writers come from unlikely places. We think some of the best thinkers use a wrench. not a pen.

Some of our "takes" may upset you. Thanks for feeling! Some may prop up your opinions. We hope to prompt banter at water coolers, coffee shops and family tables.

It’s so true—we in the Magnolia State often feel like Horace Benbow. Faulkner tapped into us.

How about us doing some head-scratching together?

Let’s laugh, muse and talk. After all, Mississippi Matters.

So why
